Tips To Help Improve Your IELTS Score

IELTS or the International English Language Testing System evaluates your proficiency in the English language. It is widely used for foreign university admissions and immigration. A good IELTS score can open doors for you, so it is worth taking the time to prepare for the test and to try to get the best score possible. While the test can be challenging, there are some things you can do to prepare and improve your score. In this article, we have compiled a few tips we share with our students at IELTS coaching in Jalandhar. These tips will give you a basic framework for improving your IELTS score.

What should I do before IELTS preparation?

Studying for an international examination requires dedication and effort from your end. Here is a checklist for you:

  1. Know the format:

The IELTS test format is the same in all countries and at all test centers. Check out the test format once you decide to prepare.

The exam is divided into 4 parts – listening, reading, writing, and speaking. It is important for you to know the time limit for each part.

  1. Organize:

Strategy is a very important aspect to consider for any exam. Once you know the test format, you can strategize accordingly.

First of all, you need to know your current level of English proficiency. You can know this by taking a few free online tests. These tests will also help you evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. Now, once you are aware of your skills and shortcomings, you can cultivate them. You can focus on your strengths and enhance them. Similarly, you can work to improve your weaknesses.

Organize your preparation accordingly. So, you can divide your time wisely between the 4 parts of the test.

  1. Coaching:

IELTS is an international-level examination. Therefore, it is best to prepare under the guidance of expert professionals. What are the steps to prepare for IELTS?

There are 3 basic steps to prepare for IELTS.

  1. Study:

There is no alternative to this. Whether you prepare by yourself at home or you enrol in a coaching centre, you have to devote time to studying. Instead of rummaging through thousands of articles on the internet, focus on your own study material.

An organized approach will help you be mentally prepared for your examination.

  1. Mock tests:

Mock tests are non-negotiable. Veteran teachers advise taking one mock test every week. This helps you analyze your progress.

If you have not taken any, we recommend taking at least 1 or 2 mock tests before your IELTS examination.

However, DO NOT take mock tests the day before your examination. It will set you in a state of panic if your score comes low. You will not be able to give your best in your final test.

  1. Incorporate English into your daily life:

When you are preparing for the IELTS, this is an important point to consider. You should understand that you need leisure time to be able to perform your best mentally. But, even during your leisure time, you can prepare yourself to score better for IELTS. How?

Watch English movies, listen to English songs, and converse in English. These are a few very simple tips you can easily follow.

  1. Utilize the guidance you receive:

At VCanXL, the leading IELTS coaching centre in Jalandhar, you will get guidance from the most renowned teachers. But it is up to you to utilize their experience. Take note of the advice and personal suggestions they give you to improve.

Tips to follow before your examination:

Remember, the day before and the actual day of your examination is crucial. So, make sure to abide by the following guidelines to ensure that you can give your best. Any mishappenings on these two days can make you fail in your exam even though you had prepared well.

  1. Organize:

Check the venue of your examination hall. Make sure to check the route you need to take.

Organize your backpack the day before your test. Remember to take your government ID proof with you. Always carry an extra pen, an extra pencil, and an eraser. Do not borrow or lend from another examinee during the exam.

  1. Be punctual:

Arrive at your test center at least 90 minutes earlier than the scheduled time. There are many security checks you need to go through. So, it is best to arrive early so that you will still have some time to rest.

  1. Eat, drink, and visit the restroom before your exam:

You are not allowed to eat or smoke during the test. Since the test lasts for a prolonged time, make sure to eat well. Avoid greasy, spicy, very heavy food, and caffeine before the test as it will cause drowsiness.

You are permitted to use the toilet during the test. But time is precious, and you don’t want to miss out on your questions.

  1. Check the time:

Wristwatches are not permitted inside the examination hall. But there will be a wall clock. Make sure to follow it.

Do not spend too much time on a single question or a single section. If you do not know the answer to a question, write in brief. Go to the next question. Come back to the previous question if you still have time.

  1. Speak up for your concerns:

Do not hesitate to speak up whenever you have an issue. Raise your hand if you are facing any problem with the audio device or your chair. Let them know your problem.

Even during the speaking test, if you cannot hear your examiner, ask them to repeat their question.

  1. Wear comfortable clothing:

Examination centres will have air conditioning. So, wear layered clothing. It is preferable to wear loose-fitting clothes that you feel comfortable in.

There is no dress code for the IELTS examination per se.

  1. Do not cheat, borrow, lend, or talk:

The invigilator may cancel your examination if you are caught doing any of these.

  1. Stay calm:

We understand it is not as easy as it sounds. But do not panic when you enter the examination hall. Try closing your eyes and mentally recapitulating all that you have studied.
