What To Do If Your Study Permit To Canada Is Refused?

What To Do If Your Study Permit To Canada Is Refused?

Studying abroad is a dream come true for any Indian, especially when it's in Canada. Don’t get too excited once you get the letter of acceptance in hand. Attaining the letter from any Canadian designated learning institute (DLI) does not ease the process of obtaining a Canadian study permit. This triggers the anxiety of what to do if the study permit is refused!

Thanks to India’s foreign affairs ministry, thousands of students get selected for Canadian schools every year, but also hundreds of study permit get rejected on the verge of expectations. According to information from Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), nearly 40% of study permits get refused. Though it might seem like you have crossed the hard path, the whole process of immigration with its bundles of confusing regulations, can be a slippery slope before your dream take-offs.

Let’s look at why study permits get refused & their solutions.

Few common reasons for rejection you may overlook:

1. Financial crunch

Usually, the government asks for six months of bank statements. Even if you have provided an adequate financial document for the said period of your course, it might get your permit rejected, if the immigration officer suspects your inability to financially support yourself.

Pro-tip: A financial certificate indicating a year’s financial efficiency can be advised. This showcase of financial ability is just to ensure that you can afford all your expenses abroad, on your own. Review your documents carefully when such concerns are raised and address the authority with any additional document.

2. Dual Intention

As there are many cases of people not returning to their home country, there is a high chance of getting refused a visa application on the ground of dual intent. As a study permit is a temporary visa, it mandates a return on expiration. This doesn't mean that you can’t apply for an extension. This might be a problem if you fail to provide some valid reasons for your return.

Pro-tip: Well there is no such noted rule to avoid the problem. Also, your tone & confidence is the key to walking past this danger. Convince the immigration officer with an indispensable reason to trust upon.

3. Poor job prospects in the home country

At times this can be a varying concern. Hence, providing specific proof of recommendation or convincing how the intended course can be beneficial for securing a better position in catA companies in the home country might suffice.
But given the spike in a labor shortage in Canada, this should not be a problem as Canadians are absorbing talents for their organizations at large.

4. Inadmissible medical or unclear travel history

IRCC often questions travel history and uncleared medical reports. So, Failing to provide adequate documents of your travel history or health condition can be a bar to your study permit.

Now that you know the problem, if your study permit gets refused even after providing all the necessary documents, you can go for the below-mentioned solutions.

  • Request for reconsideration
  • Re-apply with a fresh application
  • Appeal to the concerned court of Canada. For impartial assessment and better scope of approval, you may choose this path, but no one can guarantee a green flag as it has to come from the immigration officer himself/herself.
  • Seek the immigration officer's note on your permit refusal. It will also be helpful for you to work on your shortcomings.
